GRAND OPENING CEREMONY

17th April 2005

We were blessed with a warm, dry, sunny day for our Open Day and Grand Opening Ceremony for our new floodlit courts and disabled facilities.   A huge crowd turned out to witness Mark Cox (former Davis Cup finalist), Peter Norfolk (Paralympics gold medallist, 2004), Tim Seymour (coach) and Sam Richardson (Surrey LTA) compete in an exhibition match.

This was followed by the more formal proceedings when the Mayor and Mayoress opened our courts and Paul Sison presented the Lockwood Day Centre players with the SITA cup.

Representatives from the County, Borough and Parish Councils attended as well as sports officers from the Borough. Our thanks go to them all and to Tony Gorham from Lockwood, and Sue Doughty (MP during our project) who cut the celebration cake donated by Christmas’ bakery.

Throughout the day there was tennis for all, with coaching, matches and even a spot of ‘whacky’ tennis when frying pans were used!! We are so fortunate to have these facilities to be enjoyed by the whole parish.

Our thanks to many of you who are either members, supporters, donors or just interested in what goes on in the community. Particular thanks must go to the hardworking committee of the tennis club, whose Millennium project has at last succeeded.
