CLUB FINALS DAYSaturday 11th July 2009
Finals Day was the culmination of matches played throughout the summer and, this year, more people than ever had competed! The ladies' singles final once again saw a hotly fought contest between Lynn Moore and Sarah Hamilton, with victory once again for Sarah - a worthy champion whose forehand is a lethal weopon, although playing on her backhand was not the solution either! Lynn and Sarah reached all three of their class finals. Sarah won her mixed doubles with partner Alastair Kemp in three long sets against Lynn and Ollie Guerreri, whilst in the ladies' doubles Lynn had a well deserved win with partner Tracey Manasseh against Sarah Hamilton and Maggie Walsh, but it was tough going. Alastair won the men's singles comfortably against Jonathon Ripper, while he and Ollie G beat Jonathon R and Chris Lee in the men's doubles. In the veterans, John Brand and John Corbett made it through but were defeated in two sets by Ray Partridge, our club Chairman, and Peter Jezeph, who put up strong opposition. The Paula Foote Cup for the most improved player was presented to Maggie Walsh, who had worked so hard to fight back after cancer treatment and play at match standard once more. Despite the occasional drizzle, it was a good day with some excellent tennis. An American Tournament was held in parallel for club members who did not make the finals this year. The photo shows some of the finalists with their trophies. From left to right: Ray Partridge, Tracey Manasseh, Peter Jezeph, Maggie Walsh, Sarah Hamilton, Ali Kemp, Ollie Guerreri, Lynn Moore. |
