CLUB FINALS DAY

Saturday 10th July 2010

The Club Championships Finals Day took place in sizzling heat this year. Lynn Moore, Alastair Kemp and Ollie Guerreri took part in all three of their possible finals.

Lynn Moore held up the much desired ladies' singles cup following a two-set victory over Anne Fort. Unfortunately her arch rival and all-time ladies singles champion of the club, Sarah Hamilton, had to stand aside this year due to injury, but Lynn was a worthy and delighted winner. She and Tracey Manasseh were in great form and won the ladies doubles against Sarah and Nicki Cavaliero in two sets 6-0, 6-4. Sadly, in common with many clubs, we do need to encourage more women to enter the ladies’ competitions.

The mixed doubles is always a good humoured but still a fiercely competitive final and a great three sets were played with Sarah and Alastair taking the title again.

The men's final was the highlight of the day with Ollie and Ali literally hammering it out from the baseline in three long sets which astounded all the spectators as the heat really was intense. Ali emerged as winner and admitted “it's been a really tough competition for me this year with two difficult matches preceding this, but I really enjoyed it and am delighted to have won today after a hard match against a great competitor”. The score was 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The men's doubles followed immediately and yet another three-setter! Ali and Ollie, although ahead in the third set were exhausted (or dehydrated) by now and Chris Lee and Jonathan Ripper crept ahead to take the lead. There was some really steady, intelligent play by these two and it was good to have some new winners emerging.

The Veterans started the day off. Jon Nuttall and Phil Billington were defeated by our Club chairman, Ray Partridge, and Peter Jezeph in two sets. Well done to all those vets who competed! Always an enjoyable aspect of the whole competition.

Well done all - we have much to be proud of at WTC!
